Many in Ottawa County are understandably surprised by the increase in their water bill. The reality is that no one has offered a credible alternative to Wyoming water for Georgetown and other Ottawa County communities that use it. Wyoming is allocating its required infrastructure costs to user communities, so there are required water rate increases. It does not make sense for people to complain about leadership unless they can offer a credible alternative.
In contrast, there is a credible alternative to the fast-rising electric rates of Consumers Energy, and the Township Boards of Georgetown Township and Jamestown Township have proactively passed Resolutions to investigate the locally controlled electric coop option given that Zeeland’s electric coop rates are about half that of Consumers Energy’s. We should direct our energies where we can credibly cut costs now.
