When in negotiations with China or Russia, would it be wise to tell them at the outset that the USA will unilaterally disarm and have no tariffs? No, successful negotiations depend upon having strong ammunition on one’s side.
Ottawa County is in an analogous contest with Consumers Energy (CE) and the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) with respect to what happens with our county fossil fuel plants and farmlands. MPSC (which regulates CE) plans are to close the fossil fuel plants and replace with solar and wind on farmlands and residences. Ottawa County, and the parts thereof, have strong legal ammunition to control its own electric utilities, displacing the MPSC’s role. The City of Zeeland did that many years ago, as noted at its Board of Public Works website. If it keeps all of the legal ammunition available for use, Ottawa County can prevail in keeping its fossil fuel plants open for at least the next 7 years. It can also largely curtail conversion of county farmlands into solar and wind fields.
