Holtec’s plan of re-starting the Palisades nuclear plant is fundamentally flawed, as documented at https://beyondnuclear.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/12-5-23-CURRICULUM-VITAE-Palisades-APPX-10-COMPILED.pdf . But even if Palisades is re-started, there are still many practical reasons for keeping the Campbell plant open. For one, if Palisades has various needed closures for maintenance, it will be needed to have the Campbell plant producing as a backup substitute. It would be very unsafe to keep the Palisades operating because of lack of good backup supply when repair was needed. Furthermore, even nuclear power plants need electricity to stay safe: https://www.popsci.com/technology/zaporizhzhia-nuclear-power-plant-explained/ . It is important to have a robust grid that the Palisades nuclear plant may need for cooling during shutdown for repair or other exigencies.
