Natural gas has many advantages for baseload electric, but we dare not depend upon it exclusively for our baseload electric, given availability and pricing challenges as a result of severe weather and geopolitical crises. For energy security, we need the combination of coal and natural gas as our major sources of baseload electric. Nuclear also can be reliable baseload electric, but at least so far it is much more expensive than coal and natural gas. Solar and wind intermittency preclude their being baseload electric in Michigan.
