Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) like Consumers Energy and DTE in Michigan dominate the electric utility sector, despite the notable presence and success of Cooperative Owned Utilities (COUs) and Public Owned Utilities (POCs). The reality is that too often local residential customers are getting a bad deal with their IOUs, whereas data indicates that customers are generally better served by COUs and POCs. These IOUs are monopolies largely unresponsive to the needs of customers, enjoying a cozy relationship with the State Public Service Commission (such as MPSC here in Michigan).
Currently there are significant obstacles to conversion from use of IOUs to COUs by municipalities, as documented here. There should be political efforts to reduce these obstacles.
One important difference for Ottawa County’s “Save The Campbell” effort is that we offer the Trump Administration a vehicle for what it wants, both in terms of keeping the Campbell plant operating as well as its providing some of its electric to an AI data center which could be located near the Campbell plant. We plan to seek the assistance of the RUS Electric Program, Chris Wright/Department of Energy, Doug Burgum/Department of Interior, NRECA, and MPPA, along with an AI data center, in this electric cooperative project. We also plan to seek the assistance of Republican Congressional representatives and Michigan legislators, as well as the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners. We appreciate the assistance we have already received from the Trump Administration and various Republican Congressional representatives and Michigan legislators, as well as the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners.
